If you've had the chance to see Future Islands play over the past several years and checked out their merch table, chances are you spotted a few undisclosed CDRs under the 'Moss of Aura' moniker. The solo project of Gerrit Welmers, Moss of Aura has been turning out grossly underrated synthscapes via self-released CDRs since 2006.
With five albums now under his belt, the vinyl debut and brand new full length is slated to drop this August on Baltimore's Friends Records. Moss of Aura's deeply emotional and intricately simple synth compositions have been a personal favorite of the label for several years, who also released a 7″ single from Gerrit's full-time gig last year.
The first single from Wading premiered last week on Altered Zones via Weekly Tape Deck.
“Titan” comes later on in the forthcoming LP, and Ryan Ellis of WTD describes its sounds as “your favorite instrumental dub band is soundtracking an ’80s B movie while the cast of Miami Vice dances around them banging on steel drums.” Friends Records has taken its obsession with Moss of Aura one step further, re-releasing all five of the previously unavailable albums on cassette tape. The limited tape and digital releases will be made available in chronological order leading up to vinyl LP, with the first two from 2006 out now. Stream Circle in the Corner and Rushcrusher below.
