New Zealand-based production duo Sachi was discovered by Diplo after they “stalked” the EDM producer and tossed a USB drive of music into his SUV. After hearing Lunch With Bianca, the group’s recently debut EP, I’m glad Diplo had his windows down. The project is about a fictional woman named Bianca, and each song seemingly delves into different aspects of her character. The 5-track EP is characterized by intricate electronic production and choruses led by dynamic, mercurial synths.
Album standout “South Central,” in which LA artist Duckwrth waxes on the LAPD and LA gang culture over pulsing lead synths, serves a dual purpose. Not only does Duckwrth vividly narrate the fatalistic atmosphere of the streets, “in relation to Bianca, ‘South Central’ is the voice in your head telling you to ‘keep on’ with her, because she’s worth it,” according to the duo, comprised of 18-year-olds Will Thomas and Nick Chrisp.
Though “No More”–the song which Diplo heard and debuted on his BBC radio show–isn’t available for Soundcloud streaming in the United States, the other four tracks radiate an alluring buoyancy. “Hold On” is a feel good pop record comprised around sunny guitar riffs. “Heavy Breathing” is a dense electropop offering that employs female vocals and a gliding melody during the track’s bridge.
The EP is a balanced, exceptionally well-crafted electronic work that has me ready for Sachi’s next meal. I’ll keep my window open.
