On The Magic Gang's Facebook page, there are a few links shared: The Beatles, Weezer, Pavement. The fourpiece—who hails from the grey beach town of Brighton—bleed through with their influences, proving that nicely on a new track entitled “Shallow”. Using Malkmus's anxious wit and The Beatles soft-lulling pop craft, the group manages to make a new contribution in the vein of Americanized Britpop and does so with lyrics that perfectly slay. As The Magic Gang's frontman confesses to being “not so special anymore,” he also claims that he's “so shallow,” and the contrast is perfectly captured, like a musical game of tug of war.
This track comes from The Magic Gang's forthcoming debut album. More information on the band can be found here.
