New Zealand trio Yumi Zouma released their debut EP in February, then spent the year rounding out a major world tour. They’re back with a new single “Alena”, a quietly glistening disco track that hovers between synthetic distance and organic familiarity.
Kim Pflaum’s airy vocals give the lyric, “come over here and dance with me / it’s true that you will never see me feel better” a special seduction you’ll have a hard time resisting. Like a lot of dance music does explicitly, it reinforces the idea that the dance floor is a place to go to get rescued. In this case, the speaker pushes through a very relatable shyness and finds cathartic release in the track’s gorgeous refrain.
The new single is out now on digital only via Cascine. Stream it below.
