Upon a recent tour stop in NYC, in support of their Sacred Bones release, Catharsis, Austin punk outfit Institute recorded a live session at WNYU. A quirky synthesized instrumental rendition of The Zombies’ “The Way I Feel Inside” starts the set, giving way to a whole lot of guitar feedback and a disdainful snarl from vocalist Moses Brown. No further introduction necessary, the ensuing twenty minutes are breakneck—as raw and unrelenting as ought to be. Growling bass rhythms and hurdling guitar highs lay the groundwork for a performance unthinkably faster and brutally intense than the record itself, with Brown’s exasperated voice speaking for an entire history of a scene.
