For whatever reason, musicians seem to always be in the company of artists, and artists, musicians. In fact, often people do both. That’s to say, Andy Warhol only managed The Velvet Underground maybe 30 years before John Frusciante decided he wanted to paint. That on top of the fact that in just the last year, Bjork and Yoko Ono have had exhibitions displayed in MoMA. All of this points to one thing, and it’s that music has always had a special place up next to visual art. In honor of the two things being joined at the hip, MoMA Nights is hosting four shows this month; each with a different up-and-coming artist.
Every Thursday this month MoMA’s PopRally committee has selected a different artist to play after a DJ set by one of the DJ’s at Newtown Radio, a Brooklyn based internet radio station committed to discovering and playing new underground music (and one we have a show on). The DJ sets start at 5:30pm in the sculpture garden, and the performances are free with admission to the museum. The schedule is as follows:
August:
06 Galcher Lustwerk with Willie Burns
13 Lower Dens with the hosts of Satellites & Shrines
20 Regal Degal with MM
27 Tei Shi with Lomé
Hey, and if all that doesn’t seem like a good enough reason to be spending your Thursday nights in the sculpture garden at MoMA, try out Friday the 14. Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band, a group that Ono herself described as something that “would never exist,” will be playing a set. Embrace the abstractness of sentient three-dimensional figures creating sound, which occupies no physical space, in a garden otherwise full of non-sentient three-dimensional figures.
