We named Co$$ as one of the artists to watch in 2010 back in December. Still waiting on his Before I Woke LP on Tres Records, Co$$ tided us over with a record produced entirely by Numonics.
Co$$ and Numonics have been dropping leaks from Revelations since the early summer, but as usual it takes a Freddie Gibbs guest spot to get our attention – or any blog's attention, if you think about it. “Gone” does just that, but Gangsta Gibbs don't jump on no bullshit, which is no problem for Numonics. Both rappers are enlivened by the souled out string arrangement that keeps the beat in motion. But it's the psyche-funk guitar licks beneath the chorus that show Numonics' mastery of craft.
Co$$ has been a man of his word, operating in a balance of street themes and scripture. He pushes no agenda, but presents himself as man capable of mistakes. Co$$ sees no problem with pondering about greater more spiritual places over a freshly rolled blunt, which what makes his music so endearing to us.
Revelations is out today courtesy of 2DopeBoyz in association with Crooks & Castles and PONY International.
