LA-based garage pop queen Colleen Green has announced her third album. Called I Want to Grow Up, it will be available from Hardly Art on February 24. Last year’s self-produced Sock it to Me, also released on Hardly Art, was equal parts sweet and potent, featuring drum machine and synthetic instrumentation. The new LP promises a bit more fullness, bringing in JEFF the Brotherhood’s Jake Orrall and Diarrhea Planet drummer Casey Weissbuch for instrumental support.
The album deals with the thrills and terrors of adulthood for Green, who just hit 30 years old. On “Pay Attention”, she sings in her familiar clear, controlled tone of the woes of trying to live in a world full of other people: “I can’t hold a conversation / I can’t even pay attention.” But it’s clear that—at least sonically—she’s got it together more than she professes to. She’s kept the fuzz in the guitar part while introducing a few bright, clean electric riffs for accent and subbing in Weissbuch’s lightweight drums for the drum machine. The result is a sound that’s simultaneously fuller and a little less weighed down, while Green’s voice rings out purer than ever.
