Voice Coils are the new project from Sam Garrett, a Baltimore native and former member of Yukon and Roomrunner. The first single, “In Sixths” features a solid lineup of DIY players including Mitski’s vocals, Cameron Wisch of Porches on drums, and producer Caley Monahon-Ward and bassist Tony Gedrich, both of Extra Life. The song is a head-tilting fusion of metal and experimental song structures that can be compared to Deerhoof, as Mitski’s vocals are quite reminiscent of Satomi Matsuzaki’s strange timbre, as well as Mogwai’s prog-rock sensibilities. The song never really settles in the could of dust it picks up; there is rarely a cadence, as the track lifts higher and higher into snaking riffs of math-rock rhythms. Stream the track below and keep an ear out for their 7″ off Shatter Your Leaves Records on September 7.
